The periodic table has 106 elements, which are arranged into 7 periods, 18 groups, and 3 blocks. Carbon is located in period 4, group 14, and is a solid at room temperature. Its atomic number is 6. The atomic mass is 12 amu. Carbon is a fusible element. If you put a block of carbon in a fire, it will melt and become a liquid. But if you put the same block on top of another block of carbon, it will melt and become invisible again! True story!! Chemical reactions almost always produce new substances instead of just turning over the old ones. This process is called transformation, and occurs as atoms combine together to form molecules or as molecules break apart into their individual atoms again.
